Why is the term "racist" considered to be almost profanity?

Given that this country was founded on racist principles, and that the history of our nation that has been taught in our schools is based on the accomplishments and achievements of whites only for many, many years, why is it so hard to think that we are not all affected by this? Blacks most negatively, but a false sense of white superiority to whites. Please, intelligent responses only.
