I had sick child and was advised by a medical nurse to take my child to the doctor, but was penalized at work?

My child is 5 months old, i called Kaiser's After Hours medical advice on Monday night 5/7/07. She told us to call in the morning and make a appointment for the next day. I did and proceeded to call into work. I told them that I probably couldn't work at all but that I would call later and let them know. I failed to do so, as to take care of my child, which I stated clearly that she was sick. They said that I siad I would come in and thus failed to show I had corrective actions taken against me. Does the FMLA or the CFRA proctect me to take care of my infant child with out notice and reprecusions? My dad says it does, saying that as long as your were advised by a medical professional you are. I proof that I went and possible proof that they told me to come. I already plan of filling a complaint with every organization I can and with my company. Any advice or comforimation that I am in the clear would be helpiful.
