Should i go to University or should i just get a job and work?

I was planning to go to University this September, but now i'm very much undecided on what i should do. And although i would like to go, i'm not sure if i'm really and truly cut out for University. I would like to think i'm smart enough to be able to get my degree, but i'm really truthfully not sure if i would be able to go through 3 years of studying and really exceed. And i don't want to end up going to University and realising that i've wasted mine, and everyone else's time because i'm not smart enough. I see many people from my old school or just people that i know that have attended University and completed their degree, and it makes me think "well if they can do it, then so could i" but then i keep having these nagging thoughts telling me that maybe i shouldn't go and that it's a bad idea, and instead i should go get work. In all honesty i really want to be a singer, but i know that i need a back up plan in case i can't breakthrough as a singer, so the other thing i want as a career means that i will need to get a degree, and the only way to do that is by going to University. What should i do? I'm really confused, any ideas?
